Skillet’s Awake Certified Platinum; Only Active Rock Band to Go Platinum in 2012; Skillet Join Mumford & Sons and Black Keys as Only 3 Rock Bands to Go Platinum in 2012; Grammy Nominees Skillet Currently Recording Follow-Up With Producer Howard Benson (My Chemical Romance, Motorhead, All American Rejects); Album Due Spring 2013
Talk about starting the year on a high note: two-time Grammy®-nominated rock band SKILLET were in the studio putting the finishing touches on their highly anticipated new album when they received the great news that their most recent release, Awake (Atlantic/Ardent/INO), has just been certified platinum for sales in excess of one million copies in the US. It’s worth noting that Skillet was the only active rock band to achieve platinum certification in 2012, and were one of only three rock bands (the other two being Mumford & Sons and the Black Keys) to strike platinum in 2012. “We are so proud of Skillet for this crowning achievement,” stated Craig Kallman, Chairman/CEO of Atlantic Records and Julie Greenwald, Chairman/COO of Atlantic Records. “The band is hard at work finishing up their incredible new album which we can’t wait for the world to hear this Spring.”
Skillet (singer/bassist John Cooper, guitarist/keyboardist Korey Cooper, drummer Jen Ledger and guitarist Seth Morrison) is recording in Los Angeles, where they’ve re-teamed with producer Howard Benson (Motorhead, My Chemical Romance, All American Rejects), who helmed 2009’s Awake.
Giving a bit of a sneak peek into what the record will sound like, lead vocalist John Cooper says that “Musically, this record feels like a roller coaster ride. Several tracks are aggressive with dirtier and edgier guitars. Korey’s keyboards are extremely unique and Jen’s great vocals are showcased throughout the album. There are some powerful anthems and the ‘signature Skillet’ songs our fans tend to love: symphonic, classical rock duets.”
Awake was a blockbuster release for Skillet, debuting at No. 2 on Billboard‘s Top 200 Album Chart and No. 1 on the magazine’s Top Modern Rock/Alternative Albums Chart. In addition, the record hit No. 1 on iTunes‘ Top Album Chart, garnered 3 Billboard Music Awards and spawned four hit singles including the No. 1 Active Rock smash and gold-certified “Awake & Alive,” the gold-certified “Hero,” “It’s Not Me It’s You” and the platinum-certified “Monster.” “Monster” lived up to its name, selling more than a million copies and hitting Top 5 at Active Rock radio, while its companion video has generated over 47 million YouTube views. The hook-happy “Hero” was featured in season-long spots for NBC’s NFL Sunday Night Football and served as the official theme song for WWE’s Royal Rumble Pay-Per-View. The band toured endlessly in support, playing to sold-out crowds across the country, which earned them a spot on Pollstar’s Concert Pulse Chart of the Top 50 Tours for fall of 2010. Awake followed the band’s 2006’s gold-selling album, Comatose.
In other words, it was business as usual for the quartet, who over the course of the past few years have sold more than two million units in the U.S. alone, racked up more than 150 million YouTube views and amassed a diehard following (dubbed Panheads) whose members number in the millions.
It’s been 99 weeks since Skillet released Awake, the RIAA-Gold certified project that remains a best seller on the Billboard Top 200 with nearly 800,000 scans, and now the band has garnered their third consecutive RIAA Gold certified single with the No. 1 Active Rock and Christian radio hit, “Awake & Alive.” In addition, Skillet continues to pound the touring circuit. With countless major market dates under their belt, this fall they will hit secondary markets as they headline their Awake & Alive Tour with Disciple and special guests Tooth & Nail rockers Manafest and Atlantic Records’ labelmates We As Human. This tour hits following two solid years of heavy touring, including two successful AWAKE TONIGHT tours with TobyMac, numerous headline appearances at festivals, and tours with Shinedown, Papa Roach, Creed, the mainstream rock tour AVALANCHE, and more. The Skillet fan club pre-sale begins Tuesday, Aug 9th and the national on-sale starts Saturday, Aug 13th (see tour dates below).
With their latest single “It’s Not Me It’s You” just starting to impact Active Rock radio, and “Awake & Alive” currently featured on the TRANSFORMERS: Dark of the Moon soundtrack, the band has spent much of the summer headlining top music festivals in both the Christian and mainstream markets including Rockfest, Creation East and West, Sonshine, Kingdom Bound, Carolina Rebellion, Rocklahoma, XFest and Alive. This fall they will be featured on KROQ Los Angeles’ Epicenter Rock Festival.
“Awake & Alive,” the latest single from Atlantic/Ardent/INO recording group Skillet, has bulleted its way to #1 at Mainstream Active Rock Radio outlets nationwide. Their gold certified album, Awake, now features a trio of Active Rock and Christian radio blockbusters including the current hit “Awake and Alive,” the RIAA gold certified, top 5 Active Rock and Christian Rock smash, “Monster,” and the just certified RIAA gold hit “Hero,”– with digital single sales from the album now exceeding 1.5 million. “Hero,” which has already received an array of TV placements including the NFL’s Sunday Night Football, NFL Weekend Kickoff promos, ESPN, and more was most recently featured on FOX Sports’ “The Daytona 500: The American Dream,” a one-hour documentary special delivering fresh and never-before-seen footage from self-professed Skillet fan, Trevor Bayne’s historic run to Victory Lane.
In reaction to his first #1 single at mainstream radio, lead vocalist and bassist John Cooper commented, “You know, the ride we’ve been on with this album has just been beyond incredible, and to have this song imparticular hit #1 makes it even more so since it’s about living what you believe. For it to have become such a hit, well, it’s just beyond anything I could have imagined.”
Additionally, Skillet recently announced the release of a new digital EP. The Awake & Remixed EP will feature alternative versions of songs off Awake and arrive at all DSPs on March 22nd. Named one of the top 5 20 Hardest Working Bands of 2010 on the popular concert site Songkick, Skillet will then head out on the road for the “Avalanche Tour 2011,” joining Stone Sour, Theory of a Deadman, Art of Dying, and fellow Atlantic recording group Halestorm. The highly anticipated tour begins Thursday, March 24th at Chicago’s Aragon Ballroom and then continues through early May.
